Radio Transceivers

 Return

TYPES: There are a number of Brands of Transceivers in usage, basically all doing the same job, but some with more bells and whistles than others.
Normally we would classify them as Base Station, Mobiles (ie. used in a vehicle & powered by the vehicle battery supply) and Portables or Hand Helds. While manufacturers do make special models for base station use, we are not aware of any in use in Qld. Those in use are normally a mobile which is powered by a 240 Volt to 12 Volt power supply. This makes good sense as, if the mains supply fails during a fire situation, it is not difficult to to find a 12 volt vehicle battery and thus keep the base operational.

Simoco PMR 9020

This Transceiver does not have a Front panel
or even a Remote Head.
All the Controls are built into the Microphone.

The microphones are coloured either
Yellow for a Rural Fires VHF transceiver
Red for the Urban UHF transceiver
Green for Fireground UHF transceiver
These Transceivers have a `Keylock'. This prevents inadvertent change of channel when the microphone is bumped.
To release the keylock, hold the bottom left button `XP' down for 3 seconds. You are then able to use other buttons to change channel etc. The Keylock automatically reverts to `On' after 3 seconds of non-activity.

  To Select a Channel :-
  Release the keylock.
Use the `CH UP' or `CH DN' Keys on the right of the microphone face.
(For rapid selection, the keys may be held down).

  Quick Channel Selection:-
To goto Firecom or the local RFS Repeaters.
  Release the keylock.
The buttoms `M' & `I' (top row, left & middle) have been programmed for these ch.

Philips FM92

These come in two varities; the Local Control model, whereby the control panel is on the front of the transceiver, and the Remote Control model, whereby the controls are on a separate box which is then joined to the transceiver by a cable.
To Select a Channel :-
Use the `Up' or `Down' buttons.
(For rapid selection, the keys may be held down).

Simplex or Repeater Talkaround:-
 This is NOT available.
However, because this transceiver is normally used only in a secondary capacity, it was thought that it would never be required to talk to the Portable Repeaters on channels 1 to 8, thus those channels were programmed as Simplex or Talkaround. This facilitates their usage for brigade liaison.
Local Control Scan the `Scan Group' Channels:-
This has NOT been programmed. (The EProms were programmed as a production run, and it would have been difficult to produce individual brigade requirements).
